I came across a recent Wall Street Journal article “I Was Terrible at Money. My Daughter Should Learn From My Mistakes,” and it struck a chord—especially with Mother’s Day around the corner.
Like the author, many of us grew up with skewed personal finance lessons at the dinner table—or worse, none at all. Maybe we weren’t taught, or maybe we weren’t ready to listen.
And if we’re being completely honest, some of us (yes, yours truly) hoped that ignoring a bill or avoiding a financial decision would somehow make it go away.
And while I cringe now thinking about the financial habits many of us were conditioned into, the past is the past. Let’s not waste any more time dwelling on old mistakes.
Because today, we’re living in an age of information, resources, and answers—right at our fingertips!
So let’s use our experiences as motivation. Let’s talk to our daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, granddaughters, and grandsons about money—about what it means to be financially well, confident, and secure.
Let’s help the next generation be bold, informed, and even a little selfish when it comes to building their financial futures.
Let’s remind them: if they don’t know where to start—or feel overwhelmed—that’s okay. They don’t need to be financial experts (that’s what trusted professionals are for), but they do need to be advocates for their own financial futures.
Please do share the education, resources, and tools that we have available on our website at www.herpathbegins.com. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
And if you’re looking to do the same with your own finances, let’s connect. I truly believe that it’s never too late to start making personal finance a priority—no matter your age or stage in life. I’d love to see how I can support you!
Wishing each and every mom a very Happy Mother’s Day!! 💖
