The term "Sandwich Generation," coined by gerontologist Dorothy A. Miller in 1981, refers to "middle-aged adults who are simultaneously caring for their aging parents while raising their own children."
Her definition has since become the foundation for understanding the unique challenges faced by these caregivers. They encompass not just logistical demands, but also emotional and financial burdens including medical bills, caregiving costs, and the pressure of saving for retirement.
Roughly 25% of U.S. adults—around 2.5 million people—are currently part of this “generation,” facing these stressors every day.
If your aging parents are beginning to lose independence and may soon need care, now is the time to act.
Not long ago, my brother and I found ourselves in a similar situation with our mom. After reflecting on our father's struggle with Multiple Sclerosis, it became clear that the time had come to consider her future care.
It reminded us of the importance of planning ahead—ensuring my mom’s needs would be met as she ages and avoiding the hard decisions we were forced to make too late for our father."
It can be a tough conversation to have, but one that's crucial for many of us in this “Sandwich Generation”. To help navigate, have open discussions with family about responsibilities and sharing the caregiving load.
Explore local senior services to reduce personal strain and consider reaching out to support networks for emotional help. A financial professional can be a good resource to assist with adjusting budgets and exploring long-term care insurance options.
I can share with you from experience that proactive communication and planning are crucial. It'll not only help manage the caregiving journey but also preserve your own health and peace of mind.
Wishing you a Happy Wednesday! 🌿
