🌿Wednesday Wisdom: The real meaning behind my grandmother’s sticky notes

Updated: Mar 6

February 26, 2025

One of my sweetest memories of my grandmother, or “Grammie,” from her later years was how determined she was to make sure her special "things" were passed down to every one of us in the family.

If I admired something of hers, like her little, white teapot she used every afternoon or the small, wooden clock that chimed on the hour, she’d say, “You like that? It’s yours!”

Then, without hesitation, she'd grab a pen and a sticky note, write my name on it, and stick it on the bottom of the item—leaving no doubt about who the future owner would be.

At the time, I thought it was a bit quirky. Honestly, I sometimes felt sad that she was already thinking about giving away her things. But as I look back now, I realize the wisdom behind her actions.

Grammie was using sticky notes to create a personal-property list, ensuring her beloved items went to those who would appreciate them. It was a simple way to avoid confusion or disputes after she was gone.

Her thoughtful approach is a good reminder that many people assume their heirs will naturally divide personal belongings, but that’s not always the case.

If you're creating or updating your estate plan this year, consider adding Grammie’s “sticky notes” method to your process: Take the time to write down your most valued possessions and who should receive them. Keep it updated, handwritten, and store it with your estate plan.

It’s a small effort you can make today that could save your loved ones unnecessary stress later. Thanks, Grammie!

A happy Wednesday to you! 🌿
