🌿What matters most at the end of life

Last week was a tough one.

On Thursday, our family gathered to celebrate the life of my father-in-law, James F. Burns, Sr., who passed away unexpectedly just a week earlier.

If you knew Jim, you knew his passions.

He was a South Philly guy – born and raised – who loved his Philadelphia sports, the Jersey Shore, his favorite TV shows, and his dog, Prinny. He never passed up a chance to tell a great story—or an even louder joke.

He adored my mother-in-law and was a devoted husband for 57 years, but nothing brought him more joy than being Pop to his ten grandchildren.

His face would light up whenever someone shared what one of the grandkids was doing. He couldn't wait to attend a game or school event.

Being Pop wasn't just a title—it was one of his greatest joys. Family was everything to him.

His passing came as a complete surprise. None of us were prepared.

Yet, in the midst of our grief, there is comfort in knowing he was surrounded by love in his final hours.

Being there was one of the most emotional and profoundly peaceful moments I've experienced. Watching a lifetime of love, stories, and gratitude shared in those final moments is something I will never forget.

It reminded me that, at the end of our lives, what matters most isn't our careers, our accomplishments, or the things we've accumulated. It's the people we love, the memories we've created, and the legacy we leave behind.

This week, and in honor of Jim Burns, Sr., hug your family a little tighter. Make the phone call, say the words, and create the memories.

Because life is precious... and family is everything.

Thanks Pop, for reminding us what truly matters. May you rest in peace. ❤️
